Attracting external financing for conducting court cases is an industry that is actively developing in Russia. Companies and individuals are increasingly using this model. For many, litigation funding becomes the only way to attract high-quality lawyers and experts, as well as bring the case to court. It improves access to justice and the quality of justice.
More than 63% of market participants consider the service of judicial financing useful, and in some cases-just necessary.
Russia already has the first completed cases involving litigation funding, which we will discuss during the event: commercial disputes of large companies, socially significant cases and the first class actions. All of them were held due to the development of litigation funding.
The rapid growth of external financing has led to the need to regulate this market. In 2019, the idea of a bill on litigation funding that would protect the interests and rights of plaintiffs and investors was announced for the first time within the SPBILF.
During the event, we will review cases involving litigation funding (freestyle skier Maria Komissarova's lawsuit against Dr. Blum's clinic, claims of Russian factories against Western corporations, the first class actions), discuss which plaintiffs most often apply for litigation funding in Russia, provide statistics on disputes involving court investments, and talk about the preparation of a draft law on litigation funding.
