3.1. Legal Department in the Digital Age

May 29 2015
12:30 - 14:30
Hall III

Track: 3. Corporate Practice/ International Trade/ Protection of Competition

Along with development of corporate legal function its role and engagement in management and business processes are gaining momentum. That, in turn, results in higher responsibility for in-house lawyers. Top managers’ expectations of legal department's performance are also growing.

More and more business managers believe that is not enough for lawyers to focus only on the legal risk management. Some of them assume that the growing potential of legal function must and will be used as a company's competitive advantage in the increasingly challenging market environment.

In this regard the company's top lawyers get new KPIs that directly impact on their motivation. These KPIs are set to evaluate lawyers' contribution to additional business opportunities and overall competitiveness of a company.

Besides, along with individual professional performance of the function's top manager, the increasing attention is given to its business progress, corporate environment and morale, employees satisfaction rate, their engagement in corporate affairs, etc. All these and some other factors are regularly measured throughout the year and reflected in annual reports.

During the roundtable discussion the speakers will:

  • show how to improve legal aspects of business processes using modern technologies, how IT-solutions help to build up processes inside the company and explain what a 'contract constructor' is: an effective solution or waste of time;
  • demonstrate effective collaboration between the bank's legal department and the regions as well as reveal some secrets of the country's biggest legal service;
  • present the system of certain tools to optimize workflow of corporate lawyers: legal portal for customized contracts; standard contracts constructor in SAP; Law Academy and other tools to deal with law firms, its place and role in business;
  • share their views on the matter that knowledge management provides a platform and channels for the interaction in the way that benefits most offering the possibility to share the information with those who need it;
  • have a point about such improvements as:
    • Learning - on-line approach to 'equip' legal department with new skills (Video&Wiki);
    • Communication - making communities based on blogs (ex., for EEMA region) and interactive sessions to exchange best practices "Click&Chat";
    • Effectiveness - cut on routines in legal department by on-line risk evaluation and use of acquired legal expertise on repeated issues;
    • Corporate History - workflow management to capture business decision-making without e-mailing.
  • tell how changing requirements in legal function and managers expectations impact on the performance indicators of its head and which specific factors are considered there, what approaches and tools are increasingly used in our time, which is commonly called 'digital era';
  • share their visions on use of modern technologies in legal function and tools applied by lawyers in Russia and elsewhere.
